DRYLANDS RETREAT

Location: Dughum, Gheralta, Ethiopia

Client: Camel Caravan Serei Lodge PLC

Stage: Concept Design

Planned for a site located in an arid valley, this boutique hotel is to have seven rooms positioned within a bluff overlooking the Gheralta mountain range.

Simple, stone blocks built in the local vernacular style are loosely arranged within terraces and courtyards, orchestrating visitor views and allowing a casual flow through spaces.

The use of nearby quarried stone and carpentry and masonry techniques inspired by local custom, allows structures to fit seamlessly within the millenary, traditional landscape of the region.

The rural and low capacity setting dictates the use of appropriate technologies such as low cost solar technology, and the conservation of resources.
